2019-2020

As some of you know, I am sports fanatic. I have been covering sports since my sophomore year in high school, and I am still obsessed. I knew I wanted to cover sports while at CU, so I joined the student-run newspaper, the CU Independent, the first chance I could. The first game I ever covered for the paper was a volleyball game against Colorado State... That's already a lot of pressure because it is a rivalry, and to add on top of that I had no clue where I was allowed to stand and put my things since I've never stepped foot on the court before. But, I loved it. I am such a nerd when it comes to courts and lighting and I was so excited to shoot on CU's court. I was pumped to finally shoot on a college court because it is on a whole other level than high school gyms. There is good lighting, larger crowds, and everything is just bigger. During high school games, I remember sitting basically at the feet of the players on the bench, but in college you have a designated area for photos. Along with shooting volleyball, I was able to cover men's and women's basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and NFL Pro Day.

I had never covered lacrosse before coming to CU, and let me just say: I love it. I was only able to cover two games before COVID-19 and I wish I could've covered more. I didn't know how lacrosse worked before covering my first game, but I picked up quickly. Another new opportunity I was able to have through my freshman year was covering NFL Pro Day. NFL Pro day is where NFL scouts come and watch players as they go through drills. It was so cool to experience this. As someone who has NFL games on my TV all day Sunday, it was surreal to be standing by and talking to people who work for these huge teams. I worked it for about four hours, but it was all worth it. I was able to practice covering football while also having time to get creative shots with the stakes not being as high as a normal game.

I am so excited to get back out to sporting events once things get back to "normal." I am looking forward to covering even more events next year and most of all just being able to go to sporting events and being in that atmosphere again. I am ready to work stressful, close games and get the adrenaline rush while covering them. Below are some of my favorite images I was able to capture before sports were cut short, enjoy!
